2. Executive Summary
September, 2009
Dear Executive Connection Subscriber,
This month's newsletter features: The Battle of the Smartphones
3. The Battle of the Smartphones*
It's that time of year when Fortune unveils its list of fastest growing companies.
Heading the list is Research in Motion (RIM) from Waterloo, Ontario which has produced a
phenomenal ROI of 45% each year for the past three years and 84% last year. You may not
recognize the company but you've heard of the BlackBerry that President Obama and everyone
else in the world carries with them to stay connected. Its newest product, The BlackBerry
Curve, is now the top selling Smartphone in the U.S., rivaled only by the Apple iPhone.
The founders, Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis share the CEO job (a most unusual management
approach). The extroverted Balsillie is the freewheeling marketer who will talk your ear off
while the introverted Lazaridis shies away from the limelight. In 2006, Nokia owned the
Smartphone market with 49% with RIM sharing just 7%. In 2009 Q1 RIM jumped to 20% at Nokia's
and others' expense, with Nokia losing 8% and all other phones losing 9%. Since the launch of
the Apple's iPhone, RIM's quarterly sales have tripled from 1.1 Billion to 3.4 Billion.
Over the last ten years, RIM has sold more than 65 million phones to 28.5 million subscribers.
BlackBerry has made the switch from business to consumer phone with the addition of its Messenger
a hit among teens. In 2013, Smartphones will comprise 20% of the total phone market. With Dell's
introduction this year of the Pre on the Sprint network, the revitalized Palm may make some inroads,
but my money's on BlackBerry to control the phone market.
Demographics separate the legions of iPhone and BlackBerry consumers. Three-fourths of BlackBerry
users received their phone from their boss, while Apple has its 50,000 App features. Business Apps
include Excel spreadsheets to review budgets and then email to the boss, while Apple has a huge
game library. BlackBerry users do not pay a fee to break a contract while Apple users don't like
any carriers, preferring the cool Apps BlackBerry users prefer to email while flying, while Apple
users prefer Twitter.
The top five Apps with BlackBerry users are:
- Vlingo Plus
- Calorie Tracker
- Memory Booster
- The Flashlight
- Uno
Apples top five Apps are:
- Camera Zoom
- Bookworm
- Cartoon Wars
- The Price is Right
- Ragdoll Blaster
The marketing approaches are different for the top two Smartphone companies: Apple
has hitched its train to AT&T while BlackBerry affiliates with all carriers to make
individual Apps.
RIM has begun to tackle Nokia's hold on Europe by forming partnerships with 475
carriers in 160 countries. Going global is the next big wave for Smartphones.
BlackBerry plans to get into the social networking business with the success of
Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace. The teen market is booming with MP3 with a plasma
phone screen, camera, GPS, games, and Facebook Apps. BlackBerry now has App World,
a virtual storefront that collects most BlackBerry Apps in one central location.
App developers keep 80% of what they sell on BlackBerry (Apple developers only receive 70%).

Helpful Hints:
- What Smartphone do you use and why?
- What is your favorite App? Does it increase work productivity or your fun quotient?
- Do you think Netbooks (smaller laptops under $200) will hurt the current Smartphone market? If so, why?
