The Executive Connection explores the creative and analytical
process of business development, team-building, and executive
development. We are an interactive community of executives
and small business owners who desire to network with like-minded
high-performance executives to enhance our knowledge,
skills, and aptitudes in the competitive business world.
Published monthly, the Newsletter offers coaching suggestions
around the topics of: business development, financing,
marketing, networking, incorporations, mergers, human
resources, governmental regulations, and tax laws. Topics
are presented from the perspective of Keith Barton and
represent only his ideas on creating and running your
business.
Because we are an interactive community of executives
and business owners, other viewpoints are welcomed and
may be printed in future monthly newsletters with permission
from Keith Barton.
2. Executive Summary
October, 2009
Dear Executive Connection Subscriber,
This month's newsletter features: Group Coaching
3. Group Coaching
I had the good fortune to fill in for my dear friend, Randi Smith, who teaches
group coaching at UT Dallas School of Management. Twenty-nine coaches and managers
signed up for the class which was taught via telephone. The class was highly
qualified as managers in their respective companies; some had run their own businesses;
others were freelancing as coaches in leadership and organizational development;
still others had particular niches such as weight loss and church ministry.
Group coaching differs from individual coaching in that BOTH group and individual
dynamics are at play. While individual coaching focuses on the relationship between
coach and client, group coaching focuses on group dynamics. Group coaching can be
used for the following groups:
V-Group or Teleclass: This group comes together for the purpose of learning a body
of knowledge and new skill set. The teleclass on coaching is an example of this. As
group leader, one is expected to have knowledge to share with participants.
Niche Group: Niche groups are formed around topics of interest such as weight loss,
writing for first time authors, ADD, yoga and meditation. Participant outcomes are
not directly measurable, but experience is the key learning modality.
Mentor Groups: Mentoring groups are designed for those participants embarking on a
new career where knowledge transfer and instruction is important. Mentoring may also
involve networking groups who may meet without a coach. Examples include: career coaching,
college selection for high school seniors, retirement groups, and artistic groups such as
music, painting, and theatre.
High Performance Groups: Team members are typically drawn from different business areas
with varied skill sets to produce a synergistic effect on learning. Members are considered
equal in status and the dynamic is gaining consensus through conflict resolution. An example
might be an R&D team for a new product design like the Xbox 360 or getting a college program
accredited.
Mastermind Group: This group is a carefully selected group of non-competing business professionals
who participate in a mutually supportive learning community to share advice, motivation, perspectives
while maintaining respect for individual differences. Examples include: industry-specific groups
such as an investment clubs, church groups, small business CEOs, independent coaches, physicians,
lawyers, educators.
Conducting group coaching involves asking certain questions to lead to different outcomes. Examples
include: direct, non-specific, leading, conciliatory, sympathetic, and silence. Group dynamics include:
instruction, active learning, ventilation, competition or collaboration, validation, and reflection.
Each dynamic leads to a different outcome and when used appropriately, can energize the group and keep
them on task, reflective, supportive, cathartic, or competitive to reach a common goal or objective.
Finally, unique perspectives gained from individual participants who might be overly shy, aggressive,
knowing, argumentative, bored, or hostile are discussed so that group leaders can recognize and
incorporate their ideas without being offensive or silent to promote the group dynamic of active
learning. For those coaches who desire to coach groups, this course is invaluable and offers insight
into the interplay of individual and group dynamics.
Helpful Hints:
- What are the differences between individual and group coaching? When is each more
appropriate for your client who might be a corporate division.
- With a downward trend in home sales, what kind of groups might realtors form to
increase sales? What are the advantages of each group type?
- 3. If you were asked to coach a department VP on increasing group participation
would individual or group coaching be more effective and why.
