The Executive Connection explores the creative and analytical process of business development, team-building, and executive development. We are an interactive community of executives and small business owners who desire to network with like-minded high-performance executives to enhance our knowledge, skills, and aptitudes in the competitive business world.
Published monthly, the Newsletter offers coaching suggestions around the topics of: business development, financing, marketing, networking, incorporations, mergers, human resources, governmental regulations, and tax laws.
Topics are presented from the perspective of Keith Barton and represent only his ideas on creating and running your business. Because we are an interactive community of executives and business owners, other viewpoints are welcomed and may be printed in future monthly newsletters with permission from Keith Barton.
2. Executive Summary
December, 2004
Dear Executive Connection Subscriber,
This month features
an article about
emotional competence.
3. Emotional Competence
This month we are typically thinking about family and presents, busy schedules, and trying to adjust to the demands of family and jobs. Mental health types suggest that the holiday season can be the most stressful part of the year. An astute manager who is emotionally competent has a better chance of guiding his (her) team through this stressful period while still focusing on end of the year goals for stockholders and employees. I would like to introduce you to the Emotional Competence Framework from: Mosaic Competencies for Professional and Administrative Occupations (U.S. Office of Personnel Management); Spencer and Spencer, Competence at Work, and top performance and leadership competence studies published in Richard H. Rosier (ed.), The Competency Model Handbook, Volumes I and II, Boston: Linkage Press, 1994 and 1995.
Self-Awareness
Emotional Awareness: This is recognizing one's emotions and their effects. People with this competence:
• Know which emotions they are feeling and why
• Realize the links between their feelings and what they think, do, and say
• Recognize how their feelings affect their performance
• Have a guiding awareness of their values and goals
Accurate self-assessment: Knowing one's strengths and limits. People with this competence are:
• Aware of their strengths and weaknesses
• Reflective, learning from experience
• Open to candid feedback, new perspectives, continuous learning, and self-development
• Able to show a sense of humor and perspective about themselves
Self-confidence: Sureness about one's self-worth and capabilities. People with this competence:
Present themselves with self-assurance; they have "presence or charisma"
Can voice unpopular views and do what is right
Are decisive despite uncertainties and pressures
Self-Regulation
Self-control: Managing disruptive emotions and impulses. People with this competence:
• Manage impulsive and distressing feelings
• Stay composed, positive and reflective in trying moments
• Think clearly and are focused under pressure
Conscientiousness: Taking responsibility for personal performance. People with his competence:
• Meet commitments and keep promises
• Hold themselves accountable for meeting their objectives
• Are organized and careful in their work
Adaptability: Flexibility in handling change. People with this competence:
• Multi-task demands, shifting priorities, and rapid change
• Adapt their responses and tactic to fit fluid circumstances
• Are flexible in how they see events
Innovativeness: Being comfortable with and open to novel ideas and new information. People with this competence:
• Seek out fresh ideas from a wide variety of sources
• Entertain original solutions to problems
• Generate new ideas
• Take fresh perspectives and risks in their thinking
Next month I will talk about Self-Motivation and Social Awareness. Self-motivation is striving to improve or meet a standard of excellence, while social awareness is sensing others' feelings and perspective while taking an active interest in their concerns.
4. Helpful Hints
"Helpful Hints" is a monthly feature of The Executive Connection. In this section of our Newsletter, we will discuss accountability structures necessary to stay focused on your business plan and objectives.
"This Month's Helpful Hints"
1. Talk to someone this month in your office whom you don't know much about and ask them what they like to do in their free time.
2. Take time from your busy schedule to reflect on how you handle change. Do you foster anxiety and resentment in others or do you bring out the best in them?
3. How creative are you willing to be? Take a risk this month and look into an activity that you've been putting off for a long time.
