In the first round of cuts, Microsoft lays off 5000 employees on slim computer sales; fourth quarter earnings for many manufacturing, financial, software, and telecom companies are below expected; housing starts for December were down 15% adjusted for seasonal variations. Our 2008 recession continues into 2009 with no sign of abatement for at least another year.
