1. He showed decisiveness. He replaced Rosecrans with Major Gen. George Thomas, who had saved Rosecrans' army as it retreated from Chicamauga.
2. He delegated authority. He promoted William Sherman to command the Army of Tenn. after a horse fell on Grant, leaving him with two months' of injuries.
3. He executed bold plans.He opened a supply route, the "Cracker Line" to bring rations to his troops by approving Gen. William "Baldy" Smith's plan to save the Union troops from starvation.
4. He substituted action for hesitation. He began the campaign the moment he was given field command of union troops by Lincoln.
